'If something happens, it happens,' Rafael Nadal realizes it’s the right time to go all in, as focus shifts on upcoming Roland Garros and Olympics

Rafael Nadal clawed past Zizou Bergs in a nerve-wracking first-round match in Rome. The Spaniard did not seem to find his rhythm and confidence in this match to truly establish dominance like he has done countless times before.

In the post-match press conference, he hinted that his body is still adjusting to different conditions after multiple surgeries, with a hip surgery that was done last year being the most recent one. Nadal, who is known to give everything he has every time he steps onto a court, emphasized that he still wished to do that when required, irrespective of what effect it may have on him.

Arrive the moment that I need to try, I need to go for everything. If something happens, something happens. That’s the truth. Rafael Nadal said

He revealed that this was the intention he started off the year with, but issues and injuries with his abdomen rendered him unable to compete for many months after his run in Brisbane.

I really hoped that I would be able to have this progress (from) the beginning of the season till Monte-Carlo (so) that I was able to start playing at my 100 percent in Monte-Carlo. That was not the case because I had an abdominal thing. Rafael Nadal added

He also provided confirmation that he is feeling better and more ready to compete now that he has had some good matches in the Spanish swing and also in the first round in Rome.

I did this progress the last three weeks on the tour. But arrive the moment that I need to try, I need to go for everything. Rafael Nadal said

This would certainly be something to look forward to, as the statement sends out a message that Nadal is willing to do anything to push his limits and emerge victorious when his glorious career has the finish line in sight. In his last year on tour, he is looking to make an impact on his most important tournaments, the French Open and the Olympics, which will be held at the same venue this year.

Rafael Nadal to face his first top-ten opponent in almost two years

Rafael Nadal has been out of action for a large chunk of the last two years, owing to multiple injuries. Fans are eager to see what he has left in the tank, after a rusty comeback in Barcelona, followed by an improved run in Madrid.

In both these tournaments, the Spaniard only faced opponents ranked outside the top ten in the world. Alex de Minaur was the highest-ranked player he has played in well over a year, but his win against Zizou Bergs in Rome got him into a second-round encounter against Hubert Hurkacz, who is ranked 9 in the world.

This match will be a big test for the veteran and all eyes will be on it as it may provide answers to questions fans have bottled up about how Nadal’s campaign at the French Open will go if he does decide to play there.
