The Rusty Spurs
The Spurs have been a dominant power in the Western Conference for the better half of the last decade, winning 3 championships in 5 years. They find themselves in a tough spot; where do they go now? After winning the championship in 2007 The Spurs; Shoulda: Traded Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, or Tim Duncan, while their stocks were high. Coulda: Received top value for any one of them, in terms of draft picks or younger players. Woulda: Found themselves building towards their next championship, rather than teetering between playoff mediocrity and an outright 0-4 series blunder! It's not too late though, this Summer provides a faint glimpse of hope.
The Spurs will need to make some tough decisions and kick the rust off! Part ways with Antonio McDyess, Richard Jefferson, and Manu Ginobili. Acquire draft picks or some younger talent. With Tony Parker and Tim Duncan in place, and a star in the making like George hill, why not go for it? There are a number of big-name free agents available that are sick of playing on mediocre teams. Consider what Chris Bosh could bring to the Spurs. With an addition like Bosh, The Spurs would be legitimately contending for a championship next season. Then build around George Hill and Chris Bosh for the future. The 2010-2011 season is the last chance for Tim Duncan, Greg Popovich, and The Spurs as we know them.
